SMART GIRLS ROCK!!!

Today my daughter and I went to a workshop at OSU called Discovering the Scientist Within.
It was a workshop to get girls excited about entering fields in science typically dominated by men.
We had a speaker, Dr. Janet Tate, a Professor of Physics who is researching thin films, transparent circuits, and super conductors. She was very interesting.
Then we were split into groups and went on various tours and did activities.
Our first tour was to the Dept. of Food Science and Technology where we made cheese!
YUM!! We made queso fresco, a very crumbly cheese. That was fun.
Our second tour was to the Dept. of Ag and Life Sciences where we made a DNA model and then isolated our own DNA from our cheek cells. That was super cool. You could actually see the DNA strands separating from the substrate. So now we both have mini vials with our DNA in them.
We could possibly use these in our next cloning project.
Wicked cool!
I wish more girls were not afraid to show how smart they truly are because they are worried they might be called a nerd. Better yet, I wish people would stop calling smart people nerds.
Because in my opinion, SMART GIRLS ROCK!!!!
